Asia-Pacific Rent Shock

Only 4.3% of Melbourne’s entire homes come in under $100 a night. In Singapore, the figure is 21%. In Bangkok, it is 80%. The budget you have set determines not just where you can sleep, but which city you are even allowed to visit without making significant compromises on space or location.

This comparison looks at five properties across Asia-Pacific that fit within a $100 nightly cap for an entire home or private room. The prices were captured on snapshot dates in June 2026, with exchange rates fixed as of late September 2026. You are comparing a two-bedroom apartment in Bangkok against a private room in Taipei, an entire unit in Hong Kong, a condo room in Singapore, and a bedroom in Melbourne’s west. The listing pages tell you how many beds there are; this tells you what those beds are worth in their respective cities.

At $42.10 a night, this private room is $31 below the median of $72.98 for private rooms in Melbourne. It is cheaper than 91.9% of reviewed private rooms in the city. With only 4.3% of Melbourne’s entire homes and 75.1% of its private rooms at or under $100, finding accommodation under budget is difficult. Guests awarded it perfect scores for overall experience and a 4.77 for location. You save $58 a night, or $405 over a week. The trade-off is isolation: you need a car to get anywhere meaningful, and the location score reflects distance from amenities rather than quality of the room itself.

The cities side by side

Bangkok offers the most volume for your budget. With 80% of entire homes at or under $100, you have choices. The median is $52.66, so $100 buys you significantly more space than in other cities. Tokyo and Hong Kong are tighter, with around 28% of entire homes fitting the budget and medians above $130. Taipei sits in the middle, with 54.4% of entire homes under $100 and a median of $93.82.

When looking at private rooms, the landscape shifts. Singapore’s median for private rooms is $74.52, with 60.3% under $100. Melbourne’s median is $72.98, with 75.1% under $100. Taipei’s private room market is the most accessible, with 88.1% of listings at or under $100 and a median of $47.33. If you are willing to share a space, Taipei and Melbourne offer the best odds of staying under budget without extreme compromises on location.

Your $100 goes furthest in Bangkok for an entire home, where it is nearly double the median. In Hong Kong, it is a rarity for an entire home, placing you in the bottom 8% of prices. In Melbourne, it is a struggle for an entire home but reasonable for a private room. The data does not account for cleaning fees or service charges, which will vary by host and reduce your actual savings.
